The little child is growing and now toddling around the
home. They are no longer a baby anymore and both the gifts and the
birthday parties may become more extravagant. At three and four, the
child understands that they are having birthday and are looking forward to
having cake, presents and people come over to celebrate. At this age
you can still get away with a small birthday celebration at home with only
a few friends and family. However, I have heard of some large and
expensive parties being thrown for this age group (if John, Jessica and
Michael have a Pony at their party, then your child is going to want to
have one too). For the gifts, however, you do not need to go to all lengths
to get the biggest or most expensive toys. The child will enjoy the
act of opening up the packages and even forget some of the gifts they
opened up (hint for parents: if you get a lot of toys, take some and put
them in the top of the closet and do not give them to the child right
away. If you give it to them even a month from the birthday, it will
seem like they are seeing it for the first time). Clothing is always
a good gift since they are continuously growing out of their new clothes.
If getting a toy or video, try to get something that is educational, or
will help them to develop a skill. It is also okay to get something which
they will just have fun with - but skill development is very important.
