IDEAS FOR TEENAGERS AGE 13-16

The teenage years are the beginnings
of the age of rebellion. A young teenage does not want to be told
what to do. They tell you that they know everything about
everything. Many teenagers are coping with many changes in their
lives, from going through puberty, the start of dating, intermediate and
high school, and a host of other issues going on in their lives. At
the same time, their parents or guardians are lowering their protective
shield (not fully) even more than in the past to allow them to cope with
these changes. Therefore gifts for a young teenager should provide
some reassurance that everything will be okay, and give some tools for
them to cope with their issues. Sometimes they just want to be
recognized for doing a good job and a gift, even a small one, that shows
appreciation will go a long way. There are rituals and customs for
many of the children obtaining some of these ages. For instance, at
13, a Jewish boy becomes a "man" at his Bar Mitzvah and many
girls throughout the United States have a "Coming Out" party at
16, otherwise known as a Sweet Sixteen.
All of the suggestions below are for
the "average" teenager. Some are more mature than others,
and you should base your gift choices on that particular person.
Gift Ideas for Teenager's
Birthday (Ages 13-16):

Books on all subjects &
genres - books are a good way to strengthen their minds and prepare
them for the future

Clothing - Here you have to be
careful. With their independence and rebellion, the young
teenager might want to get clothing that is not your taste so I would
not give gift certificates. Purchase items that are
"in" with their peer groups, since peer pressure is a big
influence on this age group. If you are close enough to the
recipient, go with the teenager to the clothing store and help pick
out the items. This way they will get the styles that they want
and you can be there to talk them out of anything that might be too
extreme for their age group.

Money might not be a good idea
for these birthdays, unless it is a small amount. It would be
better to provide something like a treasury bond or stock certificates
or something of investment value. Although most may not
appreciate this at the time, these items will be of value in a few
years, when they do mature.

Hobbies and Interests: The
teenager may have an interest in a particular hobby or sport.
They might even having a particular talent, such as in art or
music. Get a gift that will help to promote their
interests. For instance, get a guitar if they show an interest
in music or purchase sporting equipment if they show a leaning towards

Toys & Games: There are a
few games out there (besides video and computer games) that this age
group would enjoy - but make sure the games are "cool"
enough for them. Also try to get things that would stimulate
their minds.
