Whoever thought of baby showers was a genius. The
parents not only get gifts, but they get the gifts they need to take care
of the baby. The only down side is that most parents do not know the
sex of the child beforehand (although more and more are starting to find
out).
There are three methods to purchasing a gift for a baby
shower
Ask the expecting parents what they want (for close
family and friends)
Ask the parents if they have registered with a store

Clothing (this is something they will always need -
all you need to do is find out the size. Always remember the
seasons, in case you want to buy larger sizes. Also get gender
neutral colors)
Toys (make sure they are for a baby, are safe, and
have some developmental stimulus for the child.
