After a Jewish child is one month
old, a ceremony is conducted which introduces the child to the community
and bring the child before G-d. In biblical times, an offering was
also made with prayers for the well being of the child. The ceremony
may be called the Redemption of the First Born, but others in more recent
times refer to it as a Pigeon of Ben, which is a combination of ceremony
and festivities afterwards. Because gifts are usually given for the
Birth of the child or at the Bris, gifts do not need to be provided for
this occasion - or the gifts are very small and inexpensive. If the
family has a reception back at their house later that evening, it would be
appropriate to bring a little something like a fruit basket, cookie
platter or a bottle of wine.
